clear day photos; Motion detection does a good job
This is the fifth trail cam I own, so I have some experience with different versions. This one has probably the best instruction manual I've ever seen - not only is it a good size and the print is big enough to be read without a magnifying glass, it's well written too. But even then the manual is hardly needed - I adjusted most of the settings on the camera after inserting the battery and memory card without having to read the manual, except for a few settings (to make sure I knew what they mean ).
It takes very good photos and videos - I've posted examples of both. It hasn't triggered the detector yet during the night. But even at medium sensitivity during the day, a cat was caught walking by about 20-25 feet from the camera. I have some other cameras that sometimes don't trigger as reliably when a human walks by. So good marks for the sensitivity and clarity of photos and videos - at least in the light. The microphone on this camera might not be as sensitive as on some others, but then again it doesn't seem to pick up any significant wind noise either - which I think is a good thing. Just note that you might need to turn up the volume if you're looking for things that aren't too close to the camera.
Similar to other cameras of this type, I set it to take 3 photos and then videos. And in that kind of setup, it takes the photos first and THEN starts recording. So if you want to capture more on video and sooner, snap a photo and then video, or just set it to video. I've added a photo and video showing when the photo was first taken and you can see how the video later started (assuming there were two photos in between). But the detector triggering seems to be fairly early and works well.
With that in mind, and helpfully, this camera didn't stumble every time the wind blew the leaves off trees like it has with another camera I have. So this one has - so far at least - only recorded people and animals walking, not every movement that happens to take place in the picture, which is nice. Then I don't have to search through hundreds of photos and videos of "Leaves are moving on the trees" to find the ones that say something important.
I don't have any infrared photos or videos yet - I was hoping to catch coyotes/pheasants/possums/rabbits as we allow them to come through our property in other areas. I haven't had any luck yet but if/when I have any I will post and update the review to include that experience.
Very good camera so far. Time will tell how it performs in heavier weather conditions and in the infrared.
