This metal detector is great. First time using and very first sweep and I found my first coin

My five year old got this for Christmas. I hid quarters and some other objects for us to find. The detector did not detect the quarters, but it did find many other things. Lots of things were too deep for us to find. I did not expect the detector to detect things so deep. This product is a lot of fun. We can't wait to take it to the beach. However, it is NOT waterproof. Be careful.

Great metal detector!

So I'm new to detecting and I didnt have the money to spend on a higher end detector yet. So as a starter I decided to buy this one. It was pretty easy to set up. It's super light weight. I like how it has a lot of features that some of the higher end models have. I also like how it's water proof. It does feel a little bit flimsy and cheap but It works well enough considering the price. I've used it the past couple days. I did notice sometimes it doesnt always pick up a target on the first swing while open air testing. Kind of concerning as the point of a metal detector is to find metal objects that you dont know are there. Although there is a bunch of settings for sensitivity and discrimination to play with, so I cant exactly blame the machine yet. I will say, it doesnt do it all the time and I have found tons of stuff while detecting in my yard. Sometimes you'll get a little beep and have to keep swinging in the general area to try and find it again and the numbers will jump all over the place. These are usually junk items such as pull tabs, bits of metal flashing, iron, etc. But ricomax does say in the instructions that this will sometimes happen with junk targets. Every coin or decent thing I've found does seem to have a consistent beep and number. Also the accuracy of the number for the target seems to be pretty spot on. So I think it's just a matter of learning how the machine works and getting used to the different tones and how the machine acts to certain targets... Same as most machines I'm guessing. The depth of which it can find a target seems pretty decent. So far I think the deepest thing I've found was about 8". Not too bad. Overall I think this is a good starter machine with good features, good depth, and decent accuracy, and for the price you really can't ask for more. I would definitely reccomend this to someone who wants to get started detecting and doesnt have a bunch of money to spend on a higher end unit. It will absolutely get you out swinging, finding things, and having fun in the process.

Great metal detector for beginners and very simple to use and clear instructions

I have never tried this hobby before, I got this Metal detector a couple of days ago. The device itself is quick and easy to set up with no tools required, its lightweight and comfortable so good for long periods of use. It also seems to have all the features you would need. I have only tested it in the garden so far as it has not stopped raining, it finds the nails and £1 I hid easily, the pinpoint mode works really well.

Although I had it up running and working in a few minutes it will probably take a bit of time and practise to dial all the settings and preferences in too experience the full functionality of this detector.

The metal detector compacts down to about 1m and fits into a carry bag that is included for easy transport.

I would say the metal detector is great for beginners who do not want to spend a lot of money before they know if they like the hobby, I am sure you will make some great finds with this machine.

Mostly this has been a great pinpointer, contrary to what others have said:

1. It does beep faster as you get closer to the metal
2. You can change between beep with vibration and just vibration
3. It is now waterproof

So the issue... As others have also reported, it randomly will decide to just keep beeping as soon as you turn it on. You can still just about use it because it will beep even faster when close to an object, but you loose that first level of detection because usually that first beep tells you that you are near.

For the life of me I cannot figure out what causes it. Tried new batteries, removed the circuit board to check for loose wires, tried holding down the power button in case it resets the ground balance, but nothing. And then magically it will just work normally again.

It's a shame because now I don't feel I can trust it to be ready when I need it and will be looking for a new one. I would love to recommend it, but as I'm not the only person reporting this issue its clearly a common fault.

UPDATE:

I just couldn't let it go, my engineer brain wasn't happy.... the issue is a tuning issue and can be remedied it seems. To 'fix' the issue take a small metal object and hold it near the LED before you turn it on (you might need to experiment with the position), it should now turn on and be silent. At that moment in time it is tuned WITH the metal object there and removing the object will give you a pinpointer with very low sensitivity (less than a inch!).

If you now turn it off, remove the metal object and turn it back on, it should be back to normal. Failing that you can permanently keep a metal object in that location, ideally slightly adjustable in position.

Waterproofing:

Previously the LED was pushed against a hole in the body of the pointer. That hole now has a waterproof resin seal over it. They have also upgraded the rubber seal on the lid.

Final words:

When it works and stays working, it really does have great sensitivity. The light is so useful that I can use this perfectly well in the dark as my only light source when looking for the find. If you happen to find yourself owning one of these then you will not be disappointed if you know how to keep it operating correctly.
